Device Communication and Power Disconnect Events FAQ

Learn how often devices communicate, where to find last communication data, and what Power Disconnect events mean — including important differences for trailer and asset tracking devices.

Question

Answer

How often should a device communicate?

Most devices send a communication at least once every 24 hours, regardless of whether the vehicle has moved.

Where can I see the last communication from a device?

Check the Event Detail report for a Heartbeat event, or view last communication timestamps on the Vehicle Admin page, the Last Known Location report, or the Time Since Last Location report.

What is a Power Disconnect event?

A Power Disconnect event is sent when a device is unplugged or loses power. It appears in the Event Detail report and is supported by all current OBD and covert devices, which include a backup battery.

Can I get notified when a Power Disconnect occurs?

Yes. Power Disconnect alerts are available to all service levels and can be sent to a phone number or email address. Contact support or submit a request to set one up.

Why does my trailer or asset tracker show Power Disconnect events?

These devices use complex power management due to inconsistent power sources, and Power Disconnect events are a normal part of their wake/sleep cycles. For trailer and asset trackers, this event does not indicate the device has been unplugged or removed.

How do I know if a trailer or asset tracker has actually lost power or been disconnected?

Contact support for information on alerts that can accurately reflect power loss or disconnection for these device types.
