OEM: Verifying OnStar Blue Button Key Press (BBKP) - GM OEM Vehicles
GM OEM Vehicles: OnStar Blue Button Key Press (BBKP)
Some GM vehicles require an additional activation step before they’ll report telematics data properly, the vehicle’s OnStar unit may need to be manually reactivated by the driver before connected data can flow.
This process involves the driver pressing the physical Blue Button on the rearview mirror and speaking with an OnStar fleet advisor to complete reactivation. It’s a supplemental step — not always required — but may be part of getting the vehicle to report correctly.
Step 1: Complete the Blue Button Key Press Process
The driver must be in the vehicle to complete this.
- Locate the Blue Button on top of the rearview mirror inside the vehicle.
- Press the Blue Button to initiate the OnStar connection.
- Listen carefully for any prompts from the OnStar system. If prompted, press the Blue Button again to continue.
- Once connected, ask to speak with a fleet advisor.
- When the fleet advisor comes on the line, the driver should say:
| “I am calling to reactivate my unit. My vehicle belongs to a fleet with FAN ID [insert FAN ID].” |
- Once the fleet advisor completes the reactivation, the vehicle is activated and should begin reporting connected data.
Step 2: Confirm the Vehicle Is Reporting
After the driver completes the Blue Button process and the fleet advisor confirms reactivation, allow some time for the vehicle to begin transmitting data. Check the platform to verify the vehicle has started reporting as expected.
If the vehicle still isn’t reporting after a reasonable window, contact Support and state that the Blue Button process was completed.
